Love Language #5 – Gift Giving
Gift giving is one of the easiest and most accessible love languages to learn. A gift is something you can hold in your hand and say, ‘Look, he was thinking of me,’ or ‘She remembered me.’ You must be thinking of someone to give them a gift, and the gift is a symbol of that thought – it doesn’t matter if it costs money or not.
My teenage grandson recently made a soft toy out of his baby blanket for his little cousin. The eyes were uneven and the stitching was loopy but the work and sacrifice that went into passing on his blankie is what made it so special and memorable.
Now, to be an effective gift giver you may have to change your attitude about money. Some see the purchase of a gift as an exchange of dollars for a purpose, but others who speak this love language see those dollars as an investment in expressing love for the recipient.
Remember though, making or buying presents isn’t the only way to give a gift. Your physical presence or the quality of your attention can also be a gift. So don’t forget to sometimes ‘grab the moment’ and show your love for someone by putting aside whatever else you could have been doing, to be there for them.
